Spanish I

Course Code: 3210

Grade Level: 9-12               Credits: 10                UC/CSU: Yes

Prerequisite: Students with low reading scores and poor records of academic achievement will almost certainly have difficulties with the course. Enrollment is primarily dependent on 7th grade language arts (CAT 6) scores and should possibly enroll in Spanish 1A. A score of BASIC or above is required for entry to Spanish 1.

Spanish 1 is largely conversational with emphasis on pronunciation and basic sentence patterns. Students will learn the grammatical structures to support the communicative functions specified in the course content. Basic connections should be made to local Hispanic influences.

Spanish II

Course Code: 3220

Grade Level: 9-12               Credits: 10                UC/CSU: Yes

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish I or Spanish IB with a passing grade on the district Spanish level 1 exit exam or with the consent of the instructor.

The second year develops and expands the receptive and productive language skills introduced n the first year. Cultural information and insights are integrated into each lesson providing a natural contextual link to the communication‐based grammar structures. Speaking and writing activities allow students to communicate both conversationally and in writing on specific situational topics that reflect the diversity of the contemporary Spanish‐ speaking world.

A third level of Spanish is designed to reinforce and expand knowledge and skills well beyond the competence level expected of students in Spanish II. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are emphasized with additional emphasis of the diverse cultures and traditions of the Spanish‐speaking world and Hispanic/Latin communities in the United States.

AP Spanish Language
